Tell us about yourself and your background before joining Tate as an apprentice
After leaving the Royal Navy in 2021, I decided to pursue a career in engineering whilst working part time. I attended a short engineering course and gained employment in the industry as a Sawman at a middle-sized manufacturer of bespoke printing machines. I held this role for three years until I realized that there was no more for me to learn and that I wanted more from life.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Every day is different; we work according to our test schedule. On any given day we can be testing production panels that then go out to a customer that same day, or we can be testing bespoke products developed in house by our project engineers.
Can you tell us about the guidance and support you’ve received through your apprenticeship?
Phil Major, Test Centre Manager, has been crucial to my success, helping me every step of the way through my apprenticeship. Always lending a helping hand with advice when needed.

What surprised you the most about working here?
The vast amount of equipment and the depth to the testing that goes on inside the R&D laboratory.
What skills or knowledge have you gained during your time here?
I’ve gained many skills, such as becoming efficient in the way I program my time and the way I approach tasks. I have gained a lot of confidence, because of the responsibility that my role takes on.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about changing their career path and starting an apprenticeship as an adult?
I’d say ‘go for it!’, who doesn’t want to earn whilst they learn? In my experience being an adult has helped in my ability to learn, simply because I’m set on my goals and I know exactly what I want from my course and career path.
