Combining Technology with Sustainability: Supporting Microsoft’s HQ with Tate’s Raised Access Flooring

With over 2,000 employees, 90 nationalities, and a cultural shift to more collaborative working, the Microsoft One headquarters leads the way in innovation and synergy. Set across a 330,000 sq ft site in Leopardstown, County Dublin, this unusual and striking X-shaped building signifies Microsoft’s position as an industry leader.

Designed by RKD Architects and Gensler, this modern commercial office showcases the latest concepts in people-centric building construction, as the Microsoft team had a focal point of bringing employees together in a wellbeing-focused environment. Its vast open-plan floors, private meeting areas, a digital lake and LED waterfall, on-site gym, faith rooms, 5 restaurants and eateries, and Dream Space education hub all empower a unified and flexible workplace culture.

Sustainability and circular principles have also been incorporated; the roof features rainwater collection, which is then used within the building, as well as food items grown on-site and beehives for honey. In terms of sustainability targets, the new headquarters achieved LEED Gold, and Tate’s raised access flooring solution was well suited to support its targets.

State-of-the-Art Raised Access Flooring 

Tate supplied and installed over 20,000 m2 of raised access flooring for the new Microsoft headquarters, including our RMG600 and RHG600 Simploc panels.

Our design team created a hybrid solution of medium and heavy grade flooring to meet the flexible demands of the open plan “neighbourhoods” that are at the heart of the concept. The 35,000 m2 facility incorporates 14,000 m2 of RMG600 Simploc and 6,350 m2 of RHG Simploc.

Every panel within the system comprises a galvanised steel top and bottom sheet bonded to an FSC-certified, high-density particle board core for durability.

Bringing a new dimension to collaborative working, these neighbourhoods benefit from easy access to the under-floor void, where data and power supplies can be re-routed as required to ensure communal workspaces can be reconfigured efficiently. 

Award-Winning Architecture with Tate

Tate’s products sit at the heart of one of the most exciting projects in Dublin, one that has won awards such as Best Office Architecture at the European Property Awards 2018 and Best Architectural Design – Commercial Offices at the Outstanding Property Awards London 2019. Our team were recognised by BAM, the lead contractor, for their Health and Safety performance during the installation.

The state-of-the-art office now creates a collaborative and productive environment where employees from all departments and backgrounds meet, mingle, and share ideas. The ambitious cultural shift has been achieved, all within a modern building that showcases the technological advancements that Microsoft is well-known for.
