Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Sustainable Specification
Environmental performance is central to modern building design. At Tate, Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) provide transparent, independently verified data on the environmental impact of our raised access floor systems, helping you specify with confidence.
What is an EPD?
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a standardised, third-party verified document that reports a product’s environmental impact across its whole lifecycle, in line with EN 15804 and ISO 14025.
There are two main methods of life cycle assessment, for analysing the environmental impacts of a product. There are 9 modules or categories in total, within these methods.
The first three of these are known as A1 to A3, which assesses the environmental impact during the product stage, which is also referred to as ‘cradle to gate’. The raw materials are extracted, transported to the manufacturing site, and the energy use to form the products is accounted for, along with packaging.
The second type of assessment takes into account the whole life of the product. This is modules A1 through to C4, at its end of life. It is referred to as ‘cradle to grave’, covering the whole life cycle.
Within this stage, A4 assesses transportation of the product and A5 analyses installation.
Finally, there are the 'C' modules which are known as 'end of life'. These assess environmental impacts such as the deconstruction or demolition of products, transport of waste materials, preparing these materials for recycling, the impact of disposal, and more.
EPDs provide objective, comparable data covering:
- Raw material extraction
- Manufacturing
- Transport
- Use and maintenance
- End-of-life
They enable informed, evidence-based specification decisions.
Why EPDs Matter
EPDs are widely used across the construction industry to support:
- Whole life carbon assessments
- Life Cycle Assessments (LCA)
- Green building certifications such as BREEAM and LEED
- ESG and sustainability reporting
They ensure environmental performance is measured consistently and credibly.
EPDs and Tate Raised Access Floors
Our EPDs reflect the environmental performance of our raised access floor systems, including:
- Material sourcing
- Manufacturing processes
- Energy use
- Packaging and transport
- Durability and lifespan
Publishing EPDs demonstrates our commitment to transparency and continuous improvement.
All EPDs are independently verified, measured in metres squared, ensuring the data is accurate, robust and suitable for formal reporting.
