What inspired you to join the company originally, and what’s kept you here over the years?

Having left a career in plumbing and heating engineering, I was just coming to the end of a construction college course, and my name was put forward by the college lecturer when a position was advertised with the company. I think at the time, the company were intending to look for a school leaver, but thankfully they still employed me at 29 and I started working the in the Contracts Dept the following week.

It was a completely new challenge which I thoroughly enjoyed.

How has your role evolved since you first started?

I Initially started working in the Contracts Department from 1995 to 2005, which involved site visits & ordering project materials. I then moved into the Estimating Department working on small projects. Having a previous background working in Contracts was a certainly a help while training as an Estimator.

What has been your proudest moment or most rewarding achievement at the company?

It’s difficult to pinpoint a specific moment having been with the company for 30 years, but it’s certainly rewarding to help win a major project that you’ve spent a while pricing and feel all the hard work & stress has paid off.
Over the last 30 years, I’ve been grateful to have worked with great colleagues, past & present which has made my time working here more rewarding.

What’s changed the most in the company since you joined?

Much has changed since I first started. In the early days, there were no PC’s, everything was either priced or ordered on carbon copy paper. Not just the innovation of new raised flooring products but also improved technological aspects throughout the company has evolved to keep Tate as one of the leading raised flooring manufacturers.

What advice would you give to someone starting their journey here today?

I think any new starter being employed at Tate today would enjoy working in any department. My career here began a little later in life but there are great opportunities to train, progress and have a fulfilling career working at Tate.
There are a few of close colleagues which have been here many years so that alone is great testament to the company.
