Marketing Executive, Tate Marsden Park

Sophie Van Maanen

"I started my journey at Tate in Dublin as a Marketing Executive in September 2023 on the Kingspan Group Yours to Shape Graduate Programme.

As I developed professionally, the opportunity came at the right time, and it pushed me to take on new challenges and experience the company from a completely different perspective."

What motivated your decision to relocate, and how did the opportunity come about?

I had been thinking about a change for a while both personally and professionally. The idea of relocating to Sydney really appealed to me for lifestyle reasons and just wanting something different day to day. The opportunity was presented to me by my manager, and thankfully, the company was super supportive. Everything fell into place pretty naturally from there.

In what ways has relocating helped you grow professionally, even though your role remained the same?
Relocating has made me more adaptable and confident. You’re out of your comfort zone a bit, new surroundings, new routines, and that pushes you to think differently and be more flexible. I’ve also had the chance to work more closely with new teams and see things from a different angle, which has helped me grow even without changing roles.

How has your day-to-day experience changed since relocating, professionally or personally?
It’s definitely a shift! I’m still doing the same role, but being in a new environment brings a fresh perspective. Personally, the lifestyle in Sydney has been a huge win, being near the coast, more time outdoors, and a better balance overall. I feel more energised, which has flowed into my work as well.

What’s been the most surprising or rewarding part of relocating while staying in the same job?
The most rewarding part has been discovering how energising a change of environment can be, even without changing roles. I’ve gained a renewed sense of purpose and appreciation for what I do. One surprising takeaway was how quickly I felt settled and connected, thanks to a great support network and a sense of continuity in my work. There have been challenges but overcoming them has only made the experience more worthwhile.

What would you say to a colleague who’s thinking about relocating with the company?
Go for it! If it’s something you’re considering, have the conversation and explore what’s possible. It’s a big move, but with the right support, it can be a valuable experience. It gave me a fresh outlook and helped me grow, without needing to completely change what I do
