Underfloor Service Distribution Whitepaper

Benefits of Underfloor Service Distribution

The underfloor service distribution system created by the utilization of an access floor solution gives you the ability to address many of the factors required to create the perfect indoor environment.

Underfloor Air Distribution
Underfloor Air Distribution (UFAD) can reduce energy costs and improve ventilation effectiveness, indoor air quality and employee comfort. This solution has been shown to enhance productivity, decrease absenteeism and improve the building’s value – not to mention, it significantly contributes to LEED and WELL certification.

Maximize IAQ, energy efficiency and personal comfort
UFAD delivers air at a low velocity directly into the occupied zone to improve ventilation effectiveness and indoor air quality by allowing the air to naturally rise to a ceiling return, pulling contaminants and CO2 away from occupants.

UFAD systems can also improve flexibility and control. UFAD allows for easy diffuser reconfiguration in reaction to occupancy and layout changes. Each diffuser can be equipped with personal comfort controls so that occupants can adjust the amount and direction of airflow in their space.

Aesthetically, UFAD eliminates the need for overhead ductwork allowing for exposed ceilings and reduces the amount of service distribution space, allowing for larger windows with greater daylighting and access to views.

"To better incorporate strategic pressurization in workplaces to induce airflow that will lead to improved air quality, underfloor air displacement (UFAD) systems should be considered. These systems introduce clean supply air at the floor and accept return air at the ceiling, resulting in a once through pathway of airflow across the breathing zone of occupants before the air is returned to the central filtration system or exhausted directly out of the building."

Underfloor Power and Data Distribution
Enjoy the benefits of a low-cost and flexible power and data systems for the life of your building. With modular ‘plug & play’ power wiring and zone cabling solutions, you can be assured your building will provide ultimate flexibility that can respond to organizational and technology changes quickly, easily, and cost effectively. A plug-and-play system allows you to add new equipment, address current design trends, or make other moves, adds and changes very simply and quickly.

A Flexible Service Management System
Access floors eliminate the need to embed power and data within concealed rigid structures, thereby allowing tenants the freedom to access services quickly and easily. Limitless access to these services provides the ultimate tenant flexibility.

Complete accessibility and unlimited capacity
Traditional power and data distribution is rigid and wasteful. Embedding power and low-voltage data cables in ceiling, walls and other structures limits flexibility by making change expensive and disruptive. Labor, material costs and down-time prohibit reconfiguring your space as your business needs change.

An access floor provides you with access to your service pathway at any location on the floor plate, with finished floor heights that accommodate any capacity needs.

Human & Environmental Well-being
Tate products provide many advantages throughout the construction and operation of a building. These benefits include, energy efficiency, healthier indoor environmental quality, reduction of materials and promotion of an adaptable built environment.

During the construction phase, an Underfloor Service Distribution System allows a reduction in slab-to-slab height, decreasing the amount of required construction materials including eliminating ducts and reducing power and data cable lengths.

In operation, an underfloor HVAC system performs at a much lower pressure and warmer supply temperature than a traditional ducted overhead system, boosting indoor air quality, energy efficiency and personal comfort control. Lower system pressure helps improve energy efficiency through the reduction of mechanical equipment and longer economizer hours. Additionally, the ability to reuse service supply materials such as wires, cables, outlets and diffusers during reconfiguration further improves the lifetime sustainability of any facility.
